  • Resident Evil 6 Confirmed, Features Leon and Chris as Protagonists

Capcom has been hinting the existance of a new Resident Evil installment for a long while now and on January 19, the Japanese-based company officially confirmed what everyone was expecting. Resident Evil 6 will be out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 on November 20, 2012. There will also be a PC version of the game which will come out later.

What’s quite interesting about this new title in the Resident Evil franchise is that it goes back to its roots. Not only will the game feature characters from previous installments, but it’ll also include two split campaigns. In the United States, Leon S. Kennedy is with the president 10 years after the events of Raccoon City and the trailer hints that the truth of what actually happened will be revealed. Nevertheless, when the president is about to do so, a group of terrorists infect him with a mysterious virus.

In China, Chris Redfield (now member of the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) founds himself in the middle of a bioterrorist attack. This is very reminiscent of Resident Evil 2, a game that had two separate discs and each one featured the story of a different character (Leon and Claire.) Resident Evil 6 will be the first game in the franchise to feature both Leon and Chris, something quite surprising considering the popularity of both characters. Additionally, Capcom has confirmed that new characters are yet to be announced and it should also be noted that both Leon and Chris will have a partner. Ada Wong is expected to be a playable character but this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

The upcoming title will have action-oriented and survival horror elements, mixing the old with the new to create something completely different. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who has previously worked on games such as Killer 7, Resident Evil 4 and Dragon’s Dogma, is leading the game’s development team.

Before the official announcement Capcom had posted a small blog with a countdown titled NoHopeLeft.com. The site now redirects its visitors to a YouTube page which has the Resident Evil 6 trailer on various languages.

When I first saw the official announcement stating that both Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield were going to be part Resident Evil 6 it gave me that “been there, done that” feeling. Then I saw the trailer… and let me tell you that now I’m really excited about the game. Old characters are back, gameplay seems to have been tweaked a little bit and the bleak atmosphere so proper of the older titles is featured. This seems like a step in the right direction in very sense, though I want to see more of it to be sure.

Finally, here’s the United States version of the aforementioned trailer:

WANT! Truthfully I never even picked up a resident evil game anymore after resident evil 2. I did try resident evil outbreak? I think it was, i'm not even sure I have the title right. You basically had to select a group of people you wanted to play with. Didn't appeal to me whatsoever. Anyway, I've also seen these trailers about resident evil: operation racoon city. Do you know anything more about that? I'm confused hearing word of two resident evil games now. And the operation racoon city looks like its going to be a shooter sort?

Yes, I remember those games. They were released for the the PlayStation 2 and there were two of them: Resident Evil Outbreak and Resident Evil Outbreak File 2. I also remember that you could install them on the hard drive (given that you had one which by the way was only compatible with the old PlayStation 2) to diminish some of the looooong loading times. In a way, those titles were the precursors to Left 4 Dead but unfortunately, they weren't as good and fast-paced as the latter.

Regarding Operation Raccoon City (I have to admit that I had to do some fact checking for this one): It'll be a third-person shooter that is going to come out in early 2012 (March 20, 2012 in North America and March 23, 2012 in Europe.) There will be six playable characters and each one will have a unique special ability. Here's the latest trailer I found: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...CNQQGlgd3DvYWQ

Thank you for the clarifications! I actually hadn't seen any gameplay footage yet... So I liked this. Only saw the cinematic trailer for now. I'm probably going to pick up both. I'm somewhat liking the idea of a third-person shooter. Ugh march! So much is coming out in spring , it's not even realistic . I'm going to need a second job.

RE outbreak was a less popular game. RE 1 through 3 were great, but they were a different style than modern RE games. RE 4 was probably one of the best games I've ever played, but RE5 was better, but it wasn't much of an improvement as compared to the jump between 3 and 4.

RE Operation raccoon City and RE6 are more action type, gun games. In early REs, ammo was something you would never, ever want to waste. In RE 4 and up, ammo is almost infinite.

RE games are pretty fun, but the story of it is just fantastic. Every RE game in the main series is linked in a great way, especially 1-3. Then RE5 comes out with answers to the questions of RE 1, especially regarding mystery characters, like Wesker, who played small roles in the early games, but make big appearances in the later games.

I've went through some of the old games reading files, and you can literally see the entire story unfold if you pay attention and think well.

But the gameplay is definitely original and only for certain gamers. But I still want to tell you that RE 1 and 2 can be really scary since your so dependent on things like inventory space, ammo, guns, when you last saved, etc. I mean you could be casually walking around with your pistol when a hoard of zombies come through the windows or a boss appears.

Sorry for my long speech on the series. Just my fanboy opinion.
