Thread: scanning programs via virustotal uploader BEFORE you download them

I am sure a good bit of you guys know about this but I just wanted to share it anyways.
Virustotal is a free site that will scan web pages for malware and other things using multiple virus scanners however simply entering in a URL will not allow you to scan files before you download them so they have virustotal uploader: http://virustotal.hispasecsistemas.n...er2.0Setup.exe there are multiple features in this program I am just going to be explaining how to scan files before they are downloaded.

-So to start off make sure you have installed virustotal uploader on your computer and have it open.

-You will see a title saying URL with a text box below it this is where you will be entering your URL


-Make sure you you select the "do not store downloaded files on disk" option and only that otherwise you are saving the possibly virus filled program onto your computer and it can affect you.

-Now that you know where the text entry box is you need to get the download URL now this is not in all cases as simple as copying the page URL you need to find what brings up the download so if I clicked a download button and it kept me on the same URL page but just gave me a download prompt I would need to right click it and select the copy link address option I would then paste that into my textbox, in this specific case I will be entering in the virustotal uploaders URL which is: http://virustotal.hispasecsistemas.n...er2.0Setup.exe

-After you make sure you have the proper URL put it into the textbox press the button "get and upload"
when you press this it should give you a message like this:


and then open up a virustotal scan in your default web browser, wait for it to finish and you now have succesfully and safely virus scanned a file without downloading it onto your PC


Now that I am done making this terribly easy process hard you can enjoy safely downloading programs

Basically as soon as you click the download button where it usually comes up with



It will add a new thing which will just open the file into a VT window.





Granted its only a firefox addon so chrome, safari, an IE would be out of luck, but alot of people use firefox

somebody told me about that and it looks pretty handy the only thing I dont like is firefox is laggy as hell and I dont really feel like swapping my main browser over just for something like that

Granted, but I do believe firfox is the most used internet browser so I just figured it was a good touch, anyone without firefox would have to go with the program or the other method of downloading an then uploading (which is not reccomended).
